Subject: News: RealAudio G2 improvements and services offered for acoustic musicians

The new RealAudio G2 encoding process and the G2 player are newly
released (10/1/98). I have been working with these software tools over
the last few days and I am very favorably impressed by the vast
improvement in sound quality while still using 28.8 modem protocol.

I have re-encoded all the songs on my own CD - Gonna Be The Death of
You, and invite you all to listen for yourselves. Each page has a full
recording of the song in G2 format and a partial recording, encoded
earlier this year, in the 5.0 or less format. You will be able to tell a
BIG difference. My skill at encoding for the older format was pretty
good, but the new format takes less prep work and gives better results.

My main url is http://www.hlmusic.com I have also added a few Lead Belly
recordings in G2 format for the Lead Belly songbook, an example is Easy
Rider at http://www.hlmusic.com/easyride.htm One addresses you might
want to check out is my cover of a Willie McTell song: Drive Away Blues
at http://www.hlmusic.com/drive.htm

Another of guitar only is http://www.hlmusic.com/darkwas.htm This is the
song Dark Was The Night.

I am just as excited about this new quality as I was nearly thirty years
ago when casette recording - via Norelco stenographer's machines came to
my attention. I would love to help other acoustic blues musicians use
this technology. Please feel free to contact me.

Are you referring to RealAudio Producer, or has there been a freeware
release to replace or upgrade RealAudio Live Encoder (a file that is no
longer available in the www.real.com download area)? Your 'Dark Was the
Night' file sounds great, and I'd like to know more about how it was
made. Thanks, BillR in Edmonton, AB

Thnak you for checking out my recording of "Dark Was The Night" which I
subsequently encoded with the free G2 encoder.

The endcoding was done with a free version of the G2 encoder that I used
during its free trial period sometime during Novermber, as I recall.

The clarity of the encoding is due primarily to the better quality of
the RealAudio G2 veriosn versus the previous generations of RealAudio
(2.0 to 5.0). But the G2 encoding will only do so much. I have found
certain frequency adjustments, volume level, compression techniques,
etc. to greatly enhance the encoding process.

What I have to offer is a special knowledge. technique and the "ears" to
provide a musicallly high quality encoding. Please feel free to contact
me at hclewman@mindspring.com. I will be happy to provide further
examples, or provide a free encoding of music that you would like to use
on the web.
