Subject: Question: Words for Yazoo recordings?
Message Number: 38

I understand that a guy in England has managed to pull the words off of
all of the Yazoo releases, and has published them in book form. Does
anyone know about this? Is it available? Is it worth having? It must be
worth having even if it is not perfect. I just don't seem to have the
time or patience to do it myself anymore. I'm really glad you put this
together. There aren't many places that a Country Blues Kook like myself
can get together with others with the same disease. I'll do what I can
to help keep it going. Hugh

You're looking for R.A. MacLeod's books. He advertises in the
classifieds of most of the blues mags, and he has a web page at
www.bluesworld.com I believe. I haven't seen his transcriptions, but
from what I hear, his earlier books of transcriptions were loaded with
errors. He's apparently getting much better, so maybe his later books
are worth getting.

Transcribing old blues recordings is a tricky business, especially with
guys like Charlie Patton and Blind Willie Johnson.

Rob Hutten is absolutely correct about Robert MacLeod's volumes of Yazoo
lyric transcripts. Where they fell down was in his basic lack of
knowledge of black American history, vernacular speech and terminology.
However, that said, his volumes of lyric transcriptions covering the
whole Document CD series improve with each publication and now has
others checking his transcriptions before rushing into print with them.
These Document publications are certainly worth purchasing.

I appreciate the fact that they may be lacking, but I own most of the
Yazoo series. I can't afford to go out and buy the Document series too.
Are the transcriptions that bad? The books are not inexpensive also. I
guess I wish I could see one at a book store or something. Oh well.
