Message Board Archive: Thread Number 100

Subject: Question: Is the loading speed of the message board ok now?
Message Number: 100

I just removed about half the messages (there were about 100) from the
board in an effort to make loading of the main page faster. (I still
have copies of the messages, so feel free to let me know if you're
looking for anything I've removed.) How is the speed now? Is it
satisfactory? My tentative plan is to bring the board down to about 50
threads every time it gets up to about 100. Does this seem about right?

Thanks in advance for feedback.

... it would be nice to get back to the stuff that's been removed.

I think it would be a shame to take old messages out of circulation --
there's a bunch of good material for people who have yet to discover
this forum (who won't know what they are missing because they never saw
it) or for people like me who have no memory.

Anyhow, I don't know if this is possible/easy to do with the software
you're using, Ari, but perhaps there could be a link off a main page of
most recent threads to an "archive" page that has all the threads.

How about putting all the messages up, but sorted from most to least
recent? That way people won't have to wait for the old threads to load
up first.

Possible? Easy to do?

I don't think it's possible, although if it is possible I expect it's
easy. I'll look into it.

There are a few problems with sorting in reverse order of date:

1. The "Add Message" button is at the bottom, so it would presumably be
necessary to load the whole board if you wanted to post!

2. The date of the first message in a thread would be what the board
would be sorted on, but the date of the most recent message in a thread
might be more relevant; it would be possible to have the last thread
contain the most recent message, which would be buried at the end of a
huge collection!

I should have the archive up and sorted by threads sometime this
weekend.

We recently purchased a new computer and changed our ISP. We're hooked
up at 56K, and the connection usually comes through from 33K - 44K. Our
computer has a Pentium II processor so it should be up to date for
internet speed. I find it takes about 90 - 120 sec. to download this
message board. Other internet applications feel sluggish to me, so I've
called the ISP and computer vendor but neither wants to say, yeah, it's
slow. Just out of curiousity, what are the various download times you
experience and what speed modum etc.? I know it's not acoustic blues,
but computers are now part of the "world" of acoustic blues. Thanks.
